MOORABBIN RAMS - Australia

The pitch was in tip top condition and the weather was cloudy with intermittent showers for the Athena Siam coffin dodgers vets tournament, what one would call, perfect rugby conditions.

Day One

The action was fast and furious throughout the day with quality rugby on show with some silky skills and big hits. The pre-tournament favorites and defending champions the Moorabbin rams from Australia won their group but were pushed hard all the way in their cup semi final by the Think Pink Singapore New Zealanders who were unfortunate to lose in the last play of the game 7-3 in what was a pulsating encounter. In the other cup semi final local heroes the Phuket Viagrabonds defied all expectations to beat the Wanderers Wrinkleys from Singapore 17-0 to book a place in Sundays cup final. In the plate final the Abu Dhabi Harliquins would take on the Taipei Silverbacks and in the bowl final the Beduck Stings from Singapore would take on our old friends the Cottesloe pirates from Australia.

Day Two

The day began with perfect blue sunny skies and ended with torrential rain after some superb rugby played in between. In Group A regular visitors The Asian Japanese dragons took on new boys the Alor Star Blues from Singapore who put on a display of fast running rugby to win 26-0. Local heroes the Phuket Vagabonds started against Al Ain Amblers and just scraped through after a scrappy game 7-0. In their 2nd game the vagabonds were vastly improved against the Japanese Dragons and ran out winners 24-0. Al Ain Amblers were slowly starting to find some rhythm and their bigger forwards ground down the Alor Star boys 12-5. In the 3rd game the Vagbonds team was really starting to click and beat the fancied Alor Star team 22-0 before Al Ain roared through the gears defeating the Dragons 29-5

In Group B the Moorabbin Rams B side narrowly went down 17-5 to a young and speedy Bedok side from Singapore. In the other game the much fancied Sri Lankan 7s champions the UC Lions ran out easy winners over the Royal Selangor Club from Malaysia 41-5. The 2nd game of the group was the Moorabbin Rams B side playing the UC Lions whose superior pace out wide saw them win 26-0 whilst the Bedok Kings continued their good form with a 17-0 victory over and improved RSC team. The 3rd game between Moorabbin and the RSC was a tight affair with the RSC almost causing a big upset before going down 5-0 in the dying stages of the match. Again the superior skills, fitness and pace of the UC Lions was too much for Bedok Kings to handle in the final group game with the Lions coming away with a 25-0 win.

In Group C new boys the Dubai Wasps took on the San Miguel Wanderers in a thrilling encounter which saw the Singapore side just edging it 12-7. Next up came the Groote Eylandt Mudchooks with their now famous take on the Kiwis Haka "the Chooka". Although The Old Bangkok Bangers looked a bit perturbed by the Chooka it didn't stop them running out 19-0 winners. The Dubai Wasps were once again involved in another really close and entertaining game 2 against the Mudchooks this time edging the win 12-5. San Miguel Wanderers proved to be too strong for the Bangkok Bangers with a score of 10-0. The Dubai Wasps were getting better with each game and put away a strong and determined Bangers side 10-0. The Mudchooks were obviously gaining inspiration from their chooka and almost caused a major upset against the Wanderers before going down in the last minute 5-0.

Group D had the Defending Champions the Moorabbin Rams A side opening their defense of the title against a young spirited Thai side from Hat Yai the Prince of Songkla RFC who battled hard and defended well but had no answer to the bigger and well drilled Aussie side going down 24-0. The Taipei Baboons had no answer to the dynamic play of the Japanese side Melanins going down 17-5. The PSU side put on a great display and just squeezed past the baboons 5-0. The Rams were in unforgiving form and took no prisoners beating the Melanins 27-0. In their final group game the Rams were unstoppable rolling over the Baboons 44-0 and the PSU boys putting in another stirring performance before being beaten 19- 5 by Melanins.

In the mornings youth tournament The ACF Phuket Lomas under 13s side won all their games against Surat Thani, Krabi and the Bangkok Lions to make the Sunday cup Final against the Bangkok Lions who finished 2nd in the group. In the U 16s division the Lomas were left ruing a slow start against Surat Thani going down 33-7 before coming back strongly in the 2nd game beating Krabi 10-0. Unfortunately for the local lads Krabi went on to beat Surat so would contest the Sunday cup final against Surat.

Finals Day

The Finals day of the tournament saw all teams entering the cup competition with losing teams then dropping down into the Plate side of the tournament. The 1st game of the day saw the Melanins beat our old friends from Bangkok the Bangers 24-5 to progress to the cup quarter finals followed by a strong Bedok showing who beat Alor Star Blues 10-5. In game 3 the Dubai Wasps were unlucky to be on the end of a 14-7 loss to Moorabbin Rams B. Al Ain were put to the sword by the PSU 21-0 and the Wanderers pulled out a gritty 12-3 victory over the Mudchooks. Game 6 saw the Phuket vagabonds continue with their good form beating the Taipei baboons 17-0 to set up a quarter final against the strong Rams B side. Game 7 saw the UC Lions stroll to a comfortable 26-0 win over the RSC Dog. Defending champions the Rams showed they were in no mood for mercy sweeping aside the dragons 48-0.

In the Cup quarter finals Melanins put up a valiant fight against the Rams A side before succumbing 26-0 and the UC Lions were looking good after their 29-0 win over Bedok. Again the Phuket vagabonds went from strength to strength with a tremendous win over the Rams B side 21-0 to make the Cup semi final against UC Lions. PSU narrowly went down in the last quarter final match 12-7 to the San Miguel wanderers.

The Vagabonds took to the pitch for their semi final against the UC Lions in torrential rain and produced the game of the tournament in an end to end encounter that had it all from ferocious tackling, superb handling, last ditch stops on the line and speed in the line by both sides with the Lions scoring 1st to lead before the vagabonds pulled it back to 5-5 at half time. The 2nd half saw no let up of the pace and sustained pressure by the home side almost produced a couple of scores but fantastic defense by the Lankans held them up short. With no further score it was extra time and the vagabonds went on the attack straight away to try for the golden score that would see them progress to the final but again the Lions defense held firm. With the crowd roaring on both sides a score was inevitable. It came from a turnover near the Lions line and their speedy winger broke a tackle and just managed to out sprint Vagabonds captain Darryn Mathee to score in the corner. Heartbreak for the vagabonds, elation for the lions.

The Rams A side had to dig deep in their semi final against the Wanderers side before eventually getting a 17-10 victory to reach the final against the Lions. In the past 15 years of the competition we have had some amazing finals and this has to be up there with the best. The crowd was fully behind the teams and the atmosphere was electric. In the beginning it looked like the speedy Lions backs would run away with it racing into a 10-0 lead but eventually the bigger Rams forwards and hard running centers began to make inroads into the Lions defense and eventually made it over the line to take them in 10-5 at half time. In a feisty 2nd half both teams had a man in the sin bin but still both teams with rock solid defense held out against some super rugby and it was with extra time looming that finally the bigger Aussie forwards found a gap and dived over under the posts to tie the game. With the final whistle only 30 seconds away it needed the conversion to go over for the Rams to win back to back title and it was duly dispatched.

In the other competitions the Coffin Dodgers Cup was also won by the Rams who beat the phuket Viagrabonds by 33-7. The CD Plate was won by Abu Dhabi Harlequins who saw off the challenge of the Taipei Silverbacks 17-12. The CD Bowl was won by The Cottesloe "hairy arsed" Pirates 22-10 over the Beduk Stings. The Coffin Dodgers player of the Tournament was Nick dancer of the Beduk Stings

The Main competition Plate was won by Al Ain Amblers after a hard fought game 10-5 with Alor Star Blues. The bowl was taken by The Taipei baboons who beat the Selangor Club 20-5. The Player of the tournament was Farrell of the Moorabbin Rams. The game of the Tournament Cup Semi Final Phuket Vagabonds V UC Lions

In the youth tournament the ACF Phuket Lomas prevailed 10-5 over the Bangkok lions to take the U 13s cup and Krabi defeated Surat Thani to win the U 16 division.

A great tournament at a great venue the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club.

Craig Johns Director of sports at Thanyapura had this to say "It was an exhilarating weekend of rugby on our all weather, IRB standard artificial rugby pitch. To see the local talent, Phuket Lomas, performing so well to win the U13's with a great level of sportsmanship was inspiring. Thanyapura enjoyed hosting over 300 players who played with flare, love the game and pulled together to support the amazing Asia Center Foundation charity. Well done to all the players and we look forward to hosting the Phuket 10's International tournament as well as other rugby fixtures in the future."

Big thanks to Jean Luc and his team of referees who did a great job over the weekend. Strategic Sports and the team, Kai Boonmuang, Bubble Bee and Maria Cotter for a job well done.
